Discourse of sports commentary in English and Russian: lexical features

Abstract

Abstract. The subject of this work is the discourse of sports commentary in Russian and English. The aim of the study is to identify and describe the specific features of lexical units that occur in the discourse of sports commentary (in English and Russian). The material of the study are fragments of sports broadcasts in gymnastics, tennis and figure skating from American channels – BT Sport, NBC Sports and CBS Sports (14 broadcasts) and Russian TV channels – Sport 1, Russia 2 and Eurosport Russia (15 broadcasts). The following methods were used in the work: discourse analysis method, continuous sampling method, content analysis and descriptive method. The study has its basis on making of transcripts of sports broadcasts in English and Russian, the selection of language units (lexical units), the identification and description of specific features of lexical units in the discourse of sports commentary, and the substantiation of the results
obtained. The research revealed that the most significant lexical units that are used in the discourse of sports commentary are terms, professionalisms, jargonisms and nonce words. Based on quantitative data, we can conclude that sports vocabulary in the English discourse of sports commentary is presented more widely than in Russian. Qualitative analysis reveals the specific features of communication in the sports
field in English and Russian, which indicates the linguistic and cultural differences between both discourses. The English discourse of sports commentary is characterized by a high degree of professionalism of commentators. They aim to be objective, evaluate sports competitions using their professional experience. Russian sports commentators try to convey the brightness of their impressions using jargonisms and
nonce words.
